Sources For Learning Yoga Positions

********

Yoga can be a fun and beneficial activity, but only if you take the time to properly learn it. The various yoga positions, or asanas, can be complex and put unnecessary strain on the body if done improperly. For those seeking to learn yoga, you have three primary sources for learning yoga positions: books, video, and a live teacher. Each of these has its advantages and disadvantages, so let s discuss which one will suit you as for learning your yoga positions.

Books

A good book for learning yoga positions will have details photographs that make viewing the subtlety of poses easy. One of the most comprehensive of these books might be Asanas: 608 Poses, by Dharma Mittra. The large number of yoga positions that are listed in this book make it an excellent reference from someone that s looking to try out new poses. However, for the beginner, books such as this don t give adequate instruction on how to transition between poses, safety, and other critical information.

Videos

In general, videos are a step up from books as far as learning materials for yoga positions go. For the beginner, it gives an opportunity to watch the motions involved in performing yoga as they actually happen, rather simply having to view a static photograph. Yoga videos also can give audio instruction on how to do the yoga positions properly and how to avoid injury. Keep in mind, though, that this instruction is limited to a short time, usually 30 minutes to an hour of instruction, and then you ll need new videos to learn anything new.

Instructors

Perhaps the best way to learn yoga positions for someone at any level of learning is to attend a yoga class or to work privately with an instructor. The benefits of an instructor are hard to beat, since they can demonstrate yoga positions while you re right in front of them, allowing everything to be seen easily. Even better, a yoga instructor can watch you and make corrections if you re making any mistakes.

Yoga classes bring benefits beyond just having an instructor to teach you yoga positions, though. They ll be able to help you prevent injuries and to tailor your yoga for any particular body conditions, such as pregnancy. In addition to this, attending a yoga class allows you to get with others who are interested in yoga, making it a social event as well as one for your health, and making you more likely to go to class and practice. Still, any of these three sources for learning yoga positions will help you more than doing nothing, so get out there and get ready to learn!
