In the history of herbal medicine, it shows that ancient shamans or medicine men used almost all parts of any herbal plant to alleviate sickness and diseases. Many of our medical practitioners today treat herbal medicine as nonsense but in actuality it is well founded by centuries of application and tradition.

Brief History of Herbal Medicine

The very first time that an herb was used to cure an illness has been lost in time. From as far back as we can remember, there has been already herbal medicine to cure our ancestors. There are many theories regarding how man discovered herbal medicine.

Among these theories is that ancient men observed animals eating the leaves of plants and he himself did the same. From this form of imitation, man discovered that some plants have medicinal and herbal value. The history of herbal medicine also shows that some cultures and civilizations rely heavily on the herbs and spices derived from plants as their sources of income and trade.

As civilization improved, each civilization seems to have taken note of which plants to use for certain maladies. These information and data have helped preserve the traditional and cultural beliefs of many civilizations on herbal medicines. Some are even the basis of scientific studies which may or have lead scientists to cures and other alternative herbal medicines.

The history of herbal medicine brings to light the reliance that our ancestors had on herbs for their well being. Up to this very day, many medicines are still based on herbs and other plants. The history of herbal medicine may serve as a guide to us regarding which plants have medicinal value and which do not have. Many new plants are still being discovered recently which can aid in curing illnesses and maladies.

The history of herbal medicine helps us identify the helpful and harmful characteristics of the plants that ancient people have studied. The history of herbal medicine is a great help to our current state where many new diseases are being discovered. We need all the knowledge w can get from natural and herbal medicine in order to be able to find cures and alternatives to otherwise harmful medicines.
