A Brief Biography of Dr. Felix Mann

********

Felix Mann, who became a doctor in his adult life, started his life in Germany but his family moved to England when he was only three years old and for that reason he was raised to be bilingual. Felix Mann completed his education at Cambridge University and Westminster Hospital and came to study acupuncture in the year 1958. He studied in the traditional Chinese way, as the more modern scientific approach to acupuncture had not come into existence at that period of time. Dr. Felix Mann spent the next 10 years of his life studying acupuncture and learning how to read medical Chinese. During those years he spent a study period in China so that he could effectively learn to read both the ancient Chinese texts as well as the modern Chinese texts.

Through his clinical observations Dr. Mann determined that the theoretical foundation that was the backdrop for traditional Chinese acupuncture was fundamentally flawed. He discovered that the acupuncture points as well as the meridians do not exist in any real, substantial sense and that the yin and yang as well as the five elements of traditional acupuncture are philosophical in nature and can be explained in different ways never considered before. He also questioned whether or not they simply did not exist in any sense, real or philosophical.

Dr. Mann spent the next 30 to 40 years developing a new system of acupuncture that has more to do with his belief in neurophysiological concepts and his scientific take on acupuncture. His publication called "Reinventing Acupuncture" was first published in the year 1992 with a second edition coming out in fall of 2000. His publication "Reinventing Acupuncture" is based on the tender and sore areas that are a part of every disease. Taken into account to a large extent is the radiation of pain that an individual suffers as a consequence of a disease or disorder as opposed to the tradition in the past of looking at the course of points and meridians. His new system of approaching acupuncture correlates very well with how the autonomic nervous system functions.

As previously mentioned, a great deal of the teachings of Dr. Mann's are connected to neurophysiological ideas and concepts and this newer system is especially effective for doctors and other medical health professionals who are trained in Western medicine and those who have little, if any experience with acupuncture. This form of acupuncture is often called scientific acupuncture and it fits better with the modern medical training of acupuncture than it does with the traditional form of acupuncture that is largely based on concepts that are metaphysical in nature. Even those who are trained in traditional acupuncture and believe in its intrinsic ability to heal find this more scientific version of acupuncture helpful to their medical practices.

In the case of traditional Chinese acupuncture, patients are often subjected to many treatments as well as a great many needles and stimulation that lasts for a lengthy span of time (such as 20 minutes or longer). This acupuncture system developed by Dr. Mann makes it possible for doctors to help patients in fewer treatments and to fewer needles that only involve gentle pricks of the needles. The needles also only need to be inserted for a matter of seconds to do what they are supposed to.
